The Hardest Part is Making the Change a Habit

Ha, Isn’t that the truth!

The (most recent) goal is to be strong, fit & healthy. That means exercising more, eating better and trying to lose a few pounds. While they’re all connected, it really touches different areas of life.

The exercise is a conscious decision to make better choices with my time. Who really wants to be a “couch potato”? I don’t know about you, but we’ve got so many projects on the “honey-do” list that knocking off a couple a week keeps me moving and gets it done. Nice! Really, it comes down to the fact that while I used to be a really active person, not so much today. I’ve adopted some habits that need to be shifted or broken to get to where I need to be, where I used to be. Unfortunately, it’s so much easier to change in baby steps… the way we got here. So much harder to want to change overnight and see the benefits! Time travel would be helpful here!

The eating component is harder than the exercising, most days. What I eat is as much a habit as the shower routine. How I eat – alone, on the run, as a social event – is habit too. So it touches many aspects of life, of routines, of other habits. It also impacts those around us. They either need to support the change or life becomes really difficult. Like the exercise, I’ve adopted some habits that are… well, less than optimal.

So for both of these areas – exercise and eating, it’s coming clean with myself, deciding what to change, what I’d like it to look like and then it’s committing to the change.

I’m good with change. Actually I like to believe that I thrive on change. Whether that is actually true or not, I’m not sure. It makes me feel good to believe that. The hard part for me is committing to that change, to make it a habit. It’s easy to try something new, harder to make it your routine!

When I started having trouble with the changes (because I’m making changes in my career focus as well), decided that it was time to make physical changes to our surroundings. That in physically changing up the environment, it might make other changes easier. I’ve had success with this idea in the past and will let you know how it goes. Right now my house is in an uproar.

Sometimes changing other components in your life lets you see things from a perspective you didn’t have before.

Sometimes it makes overall change easier to digest and accept.

Let me know if it works for you.
