Thankful for Compost

Some weeks, the TGIF takes a silly turn… this is one of those weeks, thankful for compost?

Since we moved into this house, each year we plant a small garden.

Two years ago, we started composting. Such a difference a little compost makes… well the wet summer doesn’t hurt either!

We started composting using a plastic garbage can with holes drilled in the sides. Just throw the right stuff in, give it some time and a few turns. It was OK. This past Christmas, Porter got me a “real” composter. We’ll see how it works in a few weeks. Composting has always been pretty easy.

Last year we had a prolific garden. Tomatoes, various hot peppers, a couple cucumbers. Plants that we were never able to grow, started to produce. I attribute it all to… you guessed it… compost!

Every year, I plant some plants as a test. Doesn’t matter the type, we’ve never been able to get squash to produce. So this year I planted a couple just to see. The yellow squash didn’t work but the zucchini, well two plants have us in zucchini for… well possibly the next year. OK, I do exaggerate but you get the idea. The zucchini was a success. Next year I’ll plant smarter, hopeful but realistic, the zucchini kind of took over. The cat had fun hiding beneath the leaves. 🙂

We’ll compost again when we clean out the garden and let it sit through the winter.

Next year, garden planning will get a little more attention. The lettuce and carrots didn’t do much, the rest are green and lush and productive! This week I’m thankful for compost, for the way nature feeds itself.

It took a little time and effort, but made all the difference. We can say that about many things.

What’s your TGIF?
