Today is May Day, it’s not a big US holiday. I only remember it because when the boys were in elementary school, it was one of those milestone holidays; and at one time we worked on this really cool international project – May Day is a much bigger deal in Europe.
Reading up for this post, I re-learned that there are actually two holidays on May 1st. One is May Day and the other is the (more widely celebrated) International Workers’ Day. International Workers’ Day actually started in the US in the late 19th century. It was a time when workers were struggling for reasonable hours in safe conditions. May Day, on the other hand, is related to celtic and germanic festivals and began as a pagan celebration.
There’s your bit of history for the day. Wikipedia has more on May Day.
I celebrated May Day with 40 minutes on the treadmill. Just a little discomfort. These days I wonder if the tweaks in my foot are because I’m paying more attention. Will just keep moving… and exercising… The cat is going crazy with my laps around the house on my heels and toes. Waiting for her to stop batting as I walk by and start following. She takes cover when the ankle weights come out.
Happy May Day!
